Undergoing vaginoplasty can be life-changing for many people. Now that the surgery is over and recovery has begun, you may wonder what to expect during your recovery journey. As you navigate this exciting new chapter in your life, you should consider several factors as you heal.

Here, we’ll share some practical information for your post-op journey.

After The Procedure

You may feel sore after your vaginoplasty surgery, and it may take some time for the anesthesia to wear off.

It’s essential to arrange for someone else to pick you up instead of driving home. It’s also advisable to have someone assist you over the next few days at home.

Pain Medications And Precautions

After the operation, your surgeon will prescribe pain medication for the first few days to help you manage pain. You may find walking to be uncomfortable during this time.

Once you finish the prescribed medication, you can manage pain with over-the-counter options. Avoid taking blood thinners, like aspirin, as they may cause unwanted bleeding.

Resting At Home

The first two weeks after surgery can be tough. You may experience discomfort, and it might be hard to do your regular activities. During this time, you should take short walks and avoid going up too many stairs or lifting heavy things. This is the time to rest and let your body heal.

Every individual’s recovery is different, but some find that the pain resolves within a few days. Most can return to work in about a week, but it could take longer depending on the type of job you have.

It can take up to three months to completely return to your normal routine. Do not do any strenuous exercise or activity until your doctor gives you clearance.

Know How To Wash The Area

Maintaining proper hygiene is a must to speed up the healing process and avoid infections. Before going home, your surgeon will teach you how to wash the operative site after using the bathroom.

There may be some bruising on the vagina after the procedure, but it should go away within a few days. The incisions will be mainly inside and should be dealt with very gently.

No Sexual Intercourse

After having a vaginoplasty, you will need to wait for one to six weeks before resuming sexual activity. Likewise, it is best to avoid using tampons, as any object placed inside the vagina could irritate the surgical wound.

It typically takes two to three months to heal and see the outcome of a vaginoplasty. Once you have fully recovered, you can live life as usual and enjoy the results of your surgery.

Keep The Vaginal Canal Open

To promote optimal healing and maintain an open vaginal canal, your doctor will give you a vaginal dilator. You must begin dilating as soon as the vaginal packing is removed.

Here are general steps to follow:

  1. Clean your dilator with soap and water, dry it, and apply vaginal lubricant on it.
  2. Gently insert the dilator at a 45-degree angle to reach the full depth.
  3. Leave the dilator in for 10 to 30 minutes or as advised.
  4. Clean your vaginal canal afterward.

Remember to take your time and be gentle with yourself. By following these instructions, you can ensure a smoother recovery.

Blood In The Urine

Intermittent bleeding and blood in your urine are normal for the first three months after a vaginoplasty.

However, you should contact your doctor right away if you experience the following:

  • A fever over 101°F
  • Can’t pee after your catheter is removed
  • Smelly discharge from the incision site

Is Douching Recommended?

Douching is not recommended. Only do it to manage specific symptoms like vaginal discharge and malodor.\

If you need to douche, use a douche bottle with a long tip and a pump function. That way, you can minimize the risk of complications. You can opt for:

  • A special solution made with salt
  • A mix of vinegar and water
  • Soapy water
