A labiaplasty is a type of vaginal rejuvenation surgical procedure performed to reduce the size or reshape the labia whilst preserving normal sensation. The labia minora (the inner portion of the labia) can become painful or uncomfortable if it protrudes beyond the labia majora (the outer portion of the labia). For some, it can also affect self-confidence and reduce sexual desire. If you are considering this type of surgery, you can learn more about the procedure and find answers to some frequently asked questions below.

Why have a labiaplasty?

The labia minora may begin to protrude for a number of reasons, such as pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, and aging. This can cause pain when wearing certain clothing, doing certain activities, or during sexual intercourse. The appearance can also result in poor self-esteem and a reduced sexual desire. A vaginal labiaplasty can reshape the labia to look more aesthetically pleasing and to be much more comfortable.

How is the surgery performed?

An anesthesia is required for this type of procedure. Depending on individual needs, a wedge excision method or a linear approach may be used to remove the unnecessary tissues and reshape the labia. The wedge excision method involves removing small V-shaped sections from both sides of the labia and then stitching the remaining skin back together with dissolvable stitches.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure can take anywhere from one to three hours to complete depending on the extent of the surgery required.

How long will it take to heal?

The healing process and length of recovery from vaginal labiaplasty can vary between patients and depends on the extent of the surgery and the patient’s overall health. It is normal to experience some bruising, swelling, and minor discomfort following a labiaplasty, which may last for around two weeks. Bed rest is typically recommended the day of the procedure, but a majority of patients are able to return to work and resume their normal activities within three to seven days. However, strenuous activity and sexual intercourse should be avoided for several weeks following the procedure. Your surgeon will be able to let you know what to expect.

Will I be left with a scar?

Incisions made during vaginal labiaplasty are discreetly hidden along the edge of the inner labia or along the inside of the outer labia, so scars are barely noticeable.

What are the risks involved?

As with any type of surgery, there are some risks involved. Complications can include:

  • Excessive bleeding
  • Separation of the suture line
  • Infection
  • Tissue scarring
  • Nerve damage
  • Blood clot
  • Allergic reaction to the anesthesia

It is vital that you immediately report to your doctor any complications you feel after having the surgery.

Am I a candidate for a labiaplasty?

The ideal candidates for vaginal labiaplasty are healthy women who:

  • Have an enlarged labia minora or an asymmetric labia
  • Are experiencing pain or discomfort (during sex or other physical activities) as a result of an enlarged labia
  • Have an excessive amount of skin tissue on the labia
  • Are embarrassed by the appearance of their labia (such as in swimwear and other types of clothing)
  • Want a smoother, more refined shape to the labia
  • Would like a reduction in the size of their pubic mound
