As with any type of surgery, vaginal aesthetic treatments such as labiaplasty come with possible risks. The procedure involves the reconstruction or repair of the vagina and, as such, can result in bleeding, infection, scarring of tissue, or reduced genital sensitivity if certain protocols are not properly followed.

However, there are ways to prepare for vaginal aesthetic surgery and certain precautions that you and your surgeon can take to greatly minimize these risks and ensure satisfying results.

Steps to Take for Safe Vaginal Rejuvenation

The purpose of vaginal aesthetic treatment (also referred to as vaginoplasty) is to improve the appearance or function of the vagina by smoothing out or decreasing the size of the labia, the fleshy lobes of the vagina.

Before undergoing treatment, you will be given a physical exam by your doctor to assess your general health and to learn more about your medical history. If you are a suitable candidate for vaginal rejuvenation, your doctor will educate you about the risks, benefits, and postsurgical care requirements, and offer recommendations on how to lower your risk of complications – such as quitting smoking.

The following simple guidelines can reduce possible side effects associated with the procedure and help you get the best result:

  • Make sure you are hydrated. Drink at least eight glasses of water per day.
  • Do not schedule the procedure when you are actively menstruating.
  • Have your pubic hair fully shaved prior to treatment.
  • Avoid over-the-counter medications (e.g., aspirin, Motrin, ibuprofen) for one week prior to your procedure, and inform your provider if you are taking blood thinners.
  • Refrain from using tanning beds or self-tanners for four weeks before your procedure.
  • If your doctor provides you with an antiviral prescription to decrease the risk of a herpetic outbreak (skin infection), take your first tablet 24 hours before your treatment and follow instructions thereafter. At the same time, stop taking medications that may increase your risk of bruising, as instructed by your doctor.
  • Avoid supplements such as fish oil, Gingko Biloba, garlic, flax oil, cod liver oil, and vitamin A or E one week prior to treatment.
  • Avoid alcohol at least two days prior to treatment.
  • Arrange for a family member or friend to drive you home after the procedure.

On the day of your treatment, you should arrive for your appointment with clean skin. Do not apply lotion, powder oils, or other products to the treatment area. Take your prescribed medications as directed.

Note that you may experience redness and swelling, along with mild bleeding, tissue retraction, and heat and tightening sensations for several hours after treatment. In the days following the procedure, wash your skin with a gentle cleanser twice a day and pat dry (no scrubbing). It is normal to experience light spotting, mild burning, itching, swelling, and mild cramping for a few days.

Other post-treatment recommendations include:

  • Abstaining from intercourse for several weeks.
  • Refraining from inserting tampons or anything else into your vagina for one week.
  • Do not use a douche, cleanser, suppository, or other products in your vagina for one week.
  • Avoid tub baths, swimming, and hot tubs for one week.
  • Skip exercising for one week.
  • Apply hydrocortisone cream if necessary for itching. For any sores or irritated areas, apply antibiotic ointment. If you experience discomfort, you may take Tylenol and apply an ice pack for no more than 10 minutes per hour with a cotton barrier.
  • Keep yourself well hydrated.
